Boris Kuschnir ( Ukrainian Борис Ісакович Кушнір Borys Issakowytsch Kuschnir , scientific transliteration Borys Isakovyč Kušnir ; born October 28, 1948 in Kiev , Ukrainian SSR ) is a Ukrainian - Austrian violinist .

Life

Boris Kuschnir was born in Kiev in 1948 into a family of musicians, studied violin with Boris Belenkij and chamber music with Valentin Berlinskij ( Borodin Quartet ) at the Moscow State P. I. Tchaikovsky Conservatory .

Lasting influence on his artistic development had His many encounters with Dmitri Shostakovich and David Oistrakh , who also taught him. His career began in 1969 when he was one of three winners at the All Union Competition in Leningrad and played the Beethoven Violin Concerto with the Leningrad Philharmonic under the direction of Yuri Temirkanov in the final .

Subsequently he won numerous prizes at international violin and chamber music competitions (Paris, Belgrade, Sion, Trapani, Bratislava, Florence, Trieste, Gorizia, Hamburg, Vercelli). In 1970 he founded the Moscow String Quartet and was a permanent member of it until 1979. As a native Jew, he was able to apply to leave the Soviet Union in 1980 . A year later he emigrated to Vienna . He has lived in Austria since 1981, received Austrian citizenship in 1982, was first concertmaster of the Bruckner Orchester Linz until 1983 , has been a professor at the Vienna Conservatory since 1984 and has been a full professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz since 1999 .

In 2002 Boris Kuschnir was co-founder of the Kopelman Quartet , with which he has performed all over the world since then.

In 2008, the Austrian Federal President Heinz Fischer awarded Boris Kuschnir the Great Silver Medal of Honor for his services to the Republic of Austria , and in 2013 the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art, 1st Class .

In December 2014, the President of the Chinese Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing awarded Boris Kuschnir an honorary professorship.
