Career as a boxer

Vaştag started boxing at CSM Reşița , where Vasile Bala was his first trainer. He later went to the clubs Dinamo Bucharest , Selena Bacau and Freedom Star Farul Constanța (1993-1996).

In 1986 he won the gold medal in the light welterweight division at the European Junior Championships in Copenhagen , where he defeated the reigning junior world champion Jörg Teiche in the final. In 1987 he also won the welterweight gold medal at the Junior World Championships in Havana . In 1988 he took part in the Olympic Games in Seoul , but was disqualified there in the preliminary round in the fight against Abdoukerim Hamidou due to a low blow.

At the European Championships in Athens in 1989 he was defeated in the first fight just 2: 3 against the reigning European champion Borislav Abadschiejew. However, he then took part in the World Championships in Moscow in 1989 and won the welterweight medal after he had prevailed against Joe Lowe, Mujo Bajrović, Min Nam-hyon, Raúl Marquez and Siegfried Mehnert . He became the first Romanian boxing world champion and also won the election for the best boxer of the World Cup, regardless of weight class. In 1990 he won the Goodwill Games in Seattle , where he was able to beat Raúl Marquez again in the final.

At the 1991 World Championships in Sydney , he won a bronze medal in the welterweight division, after losing to Andreas Otto in the semifinals with 24:26 . At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona , he was eliminated in the quarter-finals, in the fight for a medal place, against Aníbal Acevedo .

In 1993 he won the light middleweight championships in Bursa and the World Championships in Tampere . At the World Cup, he defeated Markus Beyer , Orhan Delibaş , Sergei Karawajew and Alfredo Duvergel . In the European Championship final he had again managed to win against Orhan Delibaş. In 1994 he also won the World Cup in Bangkok , where he again beat Alfredo Duvergel.

In 1995 he won the world title in light middleweight again in Berlin . He had beaten Sergei Karawajew, Markus Beyer and Alfredo Duvergel, among others. In 1996 he also won the European Light Middleweight Championships in Vejle , defeating Markus Beyer in the final. However, this he was defeated in the preliminary round at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta .

In addition, he was Romanian junior champion in 1985 in featherweight, Romanian champion in 1988 and 1989 in welterweight, Romanian champion in 1990, 1991 and 1993 in light middleweight, and Romanian champion in 1996 in middleweight.

After retirement

Vaştag headed the training of the Romanian national boxing team from 2000 to 2002. At the beginning of 2004 he took over the office again, but canceled his contract on April 28, 2006. In November 2004 he was appointed vice-president of the Romanian boxing association. On January 28, 2007 he ran for the office of association president, but did not appear at the general meeting, so that incumbent Rudel Obreja was re-elected.

Vaştag is the father of two sons. The older, Victor Vaştag (born February 27, 1990 in Reşița ), made his debut on May 17, 2008 in the first team of FCM Reşița in a game of the second Romanian football league .
