Andreas Otto (born October 5, 1963 in Frankfurt an der Oder ) is a former German boxer.

Career

The 1.76 m tall trained machine fitter began boxing in the GDR and trained at ASK Vorwärts Frankfurt . At GDR championships he won silver in the lightweight in 1982, in 1985 in the lightweight bronze, in 1986 in the bronze in the light welterweight and in 1988 in the silver in the light welterweight. For the GDR he took part in the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul , where he was defeated in the first fight against the Canadian Howard Grant and thus finished 17th. At the European Championships in Athens in 1989 , he was only eliminated in the semifinals against the Russian Igor Ruschnikow and thus won a bronze medal in the light welterweight division. He had previously defeated the Norwegian Lars Thomassen and the West German Raschad Abdelghaffar. At the 1989 World Championships in Moscow , he fought his way to the final in the light welterweight division against Kim Ki-Taek from South Korea, Nam Kun-Ren from North Korea, Nergüin Enchbat from Mongolia and Michael Carruth from Ireland, where he again lost to Igor Ruschnikow and thus Vice world champion was.

After reunification , he was German light welterweight champion in 1990 and German welterweight champion five times in a row from 1991 to 1995. At the 1991 World Championships in Sydney he was again runner-up, this time in the welterweight division. After victories against Greg Johnson from Canada, Roberto Welin from Sweden and Francisc Vaştag from Romania, he lost this time in the final against Juan Hernández from Cuba. In 1992 he returned to the Olympic Games in Barcelona , where he was eliminated in the third round of the tournament against Michael Carruth from Ireland in 5th place.

At the European Championships in Bursa in 1993 , he won the welterweight division against Hasan Al from Denmark and Gabriel Oaidă from Romania, was eliminated in the semifinals against Vitalijus Karpačiauskas from Lithuania and won bronze. Another bronze medal in welterweight he won at the 1993 World Championships in Tampere and the 1995 World Championships in Berlin . In both competitions he was eliminated in the semifinals against Juan Hernández .
