Howard Grant (born June 22, 1966 in Saint Ann's Bay , Jamaica ) is a former Canadian boxer of Jamaican origin and current boxing trainer. He is the older brother of boxing world champion Otis Grant .

Career

The 1.80 m tall left boom boxed as an amateur exclusively light welterweight , won the bronze medal at the Junior World Championships in Santo Domingo in 1983 and the silver medal at the World Championships in Reno in 1986 . He then took part in the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh and won the gold medal. He was also Canadian champion in 1986 and 1988.

In 1988 he took part in the Summer Olympics in Seoul , but was eliminated in the round of 16 against the later silver medalist Lars Myrberg and thus finished 9th.

After the Olympic Games he switched to the professional camp and played 19 fights in Canada, the USA and England. He went undefeated in his first 16 fights and won the Canadian Lightweight Championship against Greg Gayle in May 1992. In May 1994 he boxed in Stevenage for the Commonwealth lightweight championship, but lost prematurely to Billy Schwer . After another defeat in May 1995 against Stevie Johnston , he ended his career with a record of 16 wins (9 knockout), 2 losses (2nd knockout) and one draw.

Together with his brother he is the owner of the fitness center "Grant Brothers Boxing" in Québec. He not only coached his brother until the end of his career in 2006, but also Phil Lo Greco and the four-time World Cup challenger Librado Andrade .
