Vitalijus Karpačiauskas (born July 6, 1966 in Panevėžys ) is a former Lithuanian amateur welterweight boxer .

Career

The seven-time champion of Lithuania reached third place in the European Olympic qualification in Italy in 1992 and then started at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona , where he reached fifth place in the welterweight division; after victories against Andrei Pestrajew from Russia and Pepe Reilly from the USA, he only lost to Arkhom Chenglai from Thailand in the quarterfinals .

In May 1993 he won the welterweight silver medal at the World Championships in Tampere . He prevailed against Ioannis Ioannidis from Greece, Stéphane Cazeaux from France, Han Doorenbosch from the Netherlands and Sergei Gorodnischew from Ukraine and only lost in the final against Juan Hernández from Cuba. In September of the same year he was also European welterweight champion in Bursa . On the way to the title he beat Piotr Dreas from Poland, Alexander Schkalikow from Russia, Andreas Otto from Germany and Kenan Öner from Turkey.

In June 1994 he reached a 5th place in welterweight at the World Cup in Bangkok and started in May 1995 at the World Championships in Berlin . There he won against Hamouka Kutuaschwili from Georgia, Kai Kauramæki from Finland and Nariman Atajew from Uzbekistan, was eliminated in the semifinals against Oleg Saitow from Russia and thus reached 3rd place in the welterweight division.

He then took part in the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta , defeated Hassan Mzonge from Tanzania, but lost his second fight against Camel Chater from Tunisia, which is why he was eliminated in 9th place. Also at the European Championships in Vejle in 1996 he was eliminated before reaching the medal ranks against Hasan Al from Denmark just 3: 4.

Others

In 1993 he was voted Lithuania's Sportsman of the Year. There is also an international amateur boxing tournament named after him in Lithuania. It was held for the first time in 2013 in the Panevėžys Cido Arena .
