Aníbal Santiago Acevedo

Aníbal Santiago Acevedo (born April 28, 1971 in San Juan, Puerto Rico ) is a retired Puerto Rican boxer . Acevedo was a silver medalist at the 1991 Pan American Games and the 1992 Olympic Games .

Career

amateur

In 1989 Acevedo was Junior World Champion (U19) in the lightweight (-60 kg) with a final victory over Shane Mosley , USA (28:27). At the Goodwill Games the following year, Acevedo had to admit defeat in the first fight (RSC 1st), and at the World Cup in Havana in the same year he was eliminated from the light welterweight (-63.5 kg) starting in the quarter-finals.

Things went better for him at the Pan American Games in 1991, when he beat Candelario Duvergel , Cuba , in the quarterfinals , but lost in the semifinals to Edgar Ruiz, Mexico , and thus won the bronze medal. At the 1991 World Championships , Acevedo was eliminated in the quarterfinals against Kostya Tszyu , Soviet Union (29:10).

In 1992 Acevedo qualified welterweight (-67 kg) as the winner of the American Olympic qualification tournament in Santo Domingo for the Olympic Games, in which he won Harry Simon , Namibia (13:11), Stefan Scriggins, Australia (16: 3), and Francisc Vaştag , Romania (20: 9), reached the semi-finals, which he lost to Juan Hernández, Cuba (11: 2), and thus won the Olympic bronze medal.

In 1993 Acevedo made his professional debut, but was never particularly successful. He announced his resignation in 1998 and 2007, but returned to the ring in 2001 and 2011. His record is 13 wins (11 KOs), 9 losses (5 KOs) and one draw.
