Boxing career

Rudel Obreja was Romanian junior flyweight champion in 1981, Romanian junior featherweight champion in 1982 and Romanian junior light welterweight champion in 1983. At the Junior World Championships in 1983 he was eliminated in the quarterfinals against Meldrick Taylor .

In 1984 he became Romanian welterweight champion and won the Balkan Championships. He then started at the 1984 Olympic Games , where he was able to defeat Antoine Longoudé and Michael Hughes, before being eliminated in the round of 16 against eventual Olympic champion Mark Breland .

In 1985 he lost to Joni Nyman in the quarterfinals of the European Championships 2: 3 . In 1987, 1988 and 1989 he was Romanian light middleweight champion.

In 1989 he won the silver medal in the light middleweight division at the European Championships , when he was only defeated in the final against Israjel Hakobkochjan . This he was also subject to in the semifinals of the World Championships in 1989 and won a bronze medal. In 1990 he lost again to Hakobkochjan in the quarterfinals of the Goodwill Games .

After boxing

Rudel Obreja became an entrepreneur after his active career and was President of the Romanian Boxing Association from 2005 to 2012, and Vice-President of the World Amateur Association AIBA from 2007 to August 2008 .

On August 22, 2008, a few days after the 2008 Olympic Games , Obreja was suspended as AIBA Vice President because of the possible attempt at manipulation at the Olympic boxing tournament. He himself raised allegations against officials of the AIBA with reference to a number of controversial fight decisions. In January 2010 he was also banned from all functions within AIBA for 13 years after holding a boxing event in violation of the AIBA regulations in 2009.

On July 9, 2011, the Obreja company organized the IBF title defense of the Romanian boxer Lucian Bute against the French Jean-Paul Mendy in Bucharest . Around two million euros are said to have illegally flowed to the company from the Ministry of Tourism and Regional Development under Elena Udrea . Economics minister Ion Ariton is also said to have induced the representatives of state companies to sponsor the boxing gala with 1.7 million euros.

In September 2011, the Romanian Boxing Federation was finally excluded from the world federation by the AIBA. The Romanian boxers therefore had to compete under the AIBA flag at the 2011 World Championships . On November 23, 2012 Obreja resigned from the post of President of the Romanian Boxing Federation. His successor was Leonard Doroftei .

In June 2018, Elena Udrea was sentenced to six years in prison without parole in connection with the boxing gala. The Supreme Court saw it as proven that Udrea damaged the Romanian state by around two million euros in 2011. Rudel Obreja received a five-year prison sentence for accepting the payments.

He was provisionally released in December 2018. A tribunal of the High Court of Justice and Cassation Court had ruled this after the composition of the judicial panels had been challenged, which had pronounced the judgments. In January 2019, the judgments were overturned following a decision by the Constitutional Court that ruled the selection of the five-judge juries of the Supreme Court unconstitutional.
