Elena Gabriela Udrea (born December 26, 1973 in Buzau ) is a Romanian politician of the Partidul Democrat Liberal party . She was Romania's Minister of Tourism and Regional Development from November 2008 to February 2012. With the resignation of Prime Minister Emil Boc , her tenure as minister also ended.

Life

After finishing school Udrea first studied at the Christian University Dmitrie Cantemir in Bucharest Law and graduated in 1996 from. Then she worked as a lawyer . In 2005 she began studying national security and defense at the National Defense University Carol I , from which she graduated in 2007 with a master's degree. She is working on her doctorate in this subject there, and has also been teaching at the Christian University of Dmitrie Cantemir since 2007 . She was the co-author of several legal publications.

She began her political career in 2002 as a legal advisor to the Democratic Party. From 2004 to 2005 she was an advisor in the Bucharest City Administration and President of the Legal Commission. At the end of 2005 she became the head of the state chancellery and a year later director of the Democratic Party. As a candidate in the parliamentary elections in Romania in 2008 , she won a majority of the votes in her district in November 2008 and became a member of the Chamber of Deputies . Shortly afterwards she was appointed Minister for Tourism and Regional Development.

Udrea was married to the Romanian entrepreneur Dorin Cocoș until 2013.

Allegations of corruption became known in connection with her appointment as Minister for Regional Development. Because of further allegations about "three cases of influence" and "one case of money laundering" in the so-called "Microsoft affair", in which she, as the incumbent minister, demanded, received and tried to launder bribes amounting to half a million euros , she was first placed under police arrest on February 10, 2015, then under house arrest, and on remand on February 25, 2015. In 2017 she was sentenced to six years in prison.
