Joni Kalevi Nyman (born September 5, 1962 in Pori ) is a former Finnish boxer . He was the winner of the bronze medal at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles in welterweight (class up to 67 kg body weight).

Career

Amateur career

Joni Nyman started boxing as a teenager in Pori . Even as a junior he developed into a top European boxer. In 1980, at the age of 18, he became the Finnish lightweight senior champion for the first time. In the same year he won a bronze medal at the European Junior Championships in Rimini in the lightweight. He won over Velasquez from Denmark , but lost to Vasily Schischow from the USSR in the semifinals. At the end of 1980, on the occasion of an international match in Budapest between Hungary and Finland, he achieved a remarkable point victory over Tibor Dezamits.

In 1981 he started after winning the second Finnish championship title for the first time at the European Senior Championships in Tampere . He had Lospech and met in the light welterweight division in his first fight against Vasily Schischow, to which he was defeated on points, so that he had to retire unplaced. The consolation for him was that Vasily Schischow finally also became European champion .

Also in 1982 Joni Nyman became Finnish light welterweight champion and started at the world championship in Munich . He won there over Nerqui Enchbat from Mongolia on points and over Michael Kopzog from Germany by knockout in the first round. In the quarterfinals he lost to the strong Yugoslav Mirko Puzović and was eliminated.

In 1983 Joni Nyman won the tournament with the "Tammer" ornament in Tampere. In the final, he won over Fred Moritz from the GDR . At the Finnish championship he lost to Keijo Pykko on points.

In the Olympic year 1984 Joni Nyman was Finnish welterweight champion and had thus qualified for participation in the Olympic Games in Los Angeles . In Los Angeles he won over Georges Ngangue from Cameroon , Kieran Joyce from Ireland and Dwight Frazier from Jamaica each on points and was thus in the semifinals against the South Korean An Young-su . He had a great fight against this boxer and only had to admit defeat with 2: 3 referee votes. After all, he won the bronze medal with it .

At the "Gee-Bee" tournament in Helsinki in 1984 he suffered a bitter defeat. He lost in the final of this welterweight tournament against Torsten Schmitz from the GDR by breaking off in the 1st round.

At the 1985 European Championships in Budapest , Joni Nyman was able to convince again. He won the welterweight division over the strong "Eastern Bloc" boxers Tibor Molnar from Hungary , Rudel Obreja from Romania and Dragan Vasiljević from Yugoslavia . In the final battle he was defeated by the Soviet champion Israel Akopkochjan on points and won the EM silver medal .

1986 Joni Nyman succeeded in the final of the "Tammer" -tournaments in Tampere in welterweight a point victory over Sergei Sokolow from the USSR and he also won the Nordic championship in Helsinki in the same year with a point victory in the final fight over Jörgen Troelsgaard from Denmark . In the same year he was again Finnish welterweight champion.

In 1987 Joni Nyman lost in the final battle for the Finnish championship surprisingly against Vesa Wallden, to which he also lost in the final battle of the "Gee-Bee" tournament in Helsinki in 1987. It was therefore not used at the European Championships this year.

1988 was Joni Nyman's last year as an amateur. He won the Finnish welterweight championship again this year. It was his sixth championship title. In the pre-Olympic tournament in Seoul in the spring of 1988, he was only defeated by the Soviet athlete Vladimir Yereshchenko and took 2nd place. At the actual Olympic Games, he first won victories over Manwy Sobral from Canada , Søren Antman, Sweden and Simus Chisala from Zambia . In the quarter-finals, however, he was eliminated from the United States by losing points to Kenny Gould and narrowly missed a medal again.

Profile career

Joni Nyman played his first professional fight on November 14, 1988 in Helsinki. He won against the Englishman Andrew Furlong by knockout in the 2nd round. After changing successes, he boxed on August 19, 1991 in Helsinki against Jan Nyholm for the Finnish welterweight championship and was subject to this on points. This was the only championship fight he played in his professional career. On April 27, 1998 he played his last fight for the time being in Helsinki and was defeated by the second-rate Spaniard Amadeo Pena Lloveras by technical knockout in the 5th round. Finally, after a seven-year break, Joni Nyman fought again on April 4, 2005 in Helsinki against the Czech Petr Rykala, who had only won 3 of his 33 professional fights, and beat him on points. Then he finally ended his professional career.
