Alexander Nikolayevich Koschkin
Alexander Nikolajewitsch Koschkin ( Russian Александр Николаевич Кошкин ; born September 13, 1959 in Moscow ; † October 16, 2012 ) was a Soviet boxer . He won a silver medal at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow and was European champion in 1981 and world champion light middleweight amateurs in 1982 .
Career
Alexander Koschkin started boxing as a teenager and belonged to the sports organization Arbeiterreserven ("Trudovje Reservy") in Moscow . No further information is known about its early development phase.
In 1978 he finished 2nd at the Soviet Junior Welterweight Championship after losing points in the final against Roman Filimonov. Just a year later, in 1979, he became the Soviet senior champion, defeating Valery Rashkov on points in the final battle . He was then used at the European Championships in Cologne , where he won against Ole Svendsen from Denmark on points, but lost in the quarterfinals against Ernst Müller from West Germany on points (0: 5). He came in 5th place. At the World Cup in New York , which took place for the first time in the same year , he defeated Fernando Cruz from the Philippines by knockout in the first round and David Hall from Australia by breaking off in the first round. In the final battle he was defeated by the American Edward Green on points (0: 5).
In 1980 he was able to take revenge for the defeat against Green in an international match between the USSR and the United States in Moscow . He defeated this clearly on points. In the same year Alexander Koschkin could not defend his Soviet champion welterweight title. He lost in the final against Pyotr Galkin on points. He was nevertheless nominated for the Olympic Games in Moscow in the light middleweight division. There he defeated Salah Jassim Beden from Iraq by knockout in the 1st round, Nick Wilshire from Great Britain by knockout in the 2nd round and Detlef Kästner from the GDR on points. In the final battle he was defeated by the Cuban Armando Martínez on points (1: 4 judges' votes) and won the silver medal .
In March 1981 he succeeded in winning the European Championship elimination tournament in Riga , where he defeated Igor Ilenzeyer in the light middleweight final. At the 1981 European Championships in Tampere , he defeated Detlef Kästner from the GDR (5-0), Angelo La Mattina, Italy (5-0), Michail Takow , Bulgaria (5-0) and Miodrag Perunović from Yugoslavia (4-1) each on points and became European champion . At the Soviet championship taking place in September 1981 he was eliminated in the round of the last "32" by a point defeat against Sergei Wasilenko and thus only finished 17th.
1982 Alexander Koschkin won the World Cup elimination tournament in Tallinn . He defeated it Valeri Laptjew , Nikolai Melnik and Oleg Koliadin on points. At the World Championships in Munich he was in excellent form and defeated Finn Fahnoe, Denmark (5: 0), Kalongo Bolemi from Zaire (5: 0) and Tom Carr from Ireland (5: 0) each on points. He was in the final against the strong Cuban Armando Gomez , whom he knocked down in a rousing fight with 3-2 judges' votes. He became world champion with it .
In February 1983 Alexander Koschkin lost in Las Vegas in an international match against the future professional world champion Frank Tate on points. At the Soviet championship in 1983 he was then defeated in the quarterfinals against Babken Sagradjan on points and came in this championship only on the 5th place. This is the last known result of him. Obviously, he ended his career then. Why this happened at the age of 23 is not known. However, boxers in the Soviet Union usually ended their careers between the ages of 25 and 28, because they then devoted themselves to their professional training. In addition, these boxers often started their international careers very early at the age of 18.
