Juan Carlos Lemus
Juan Carlos Lemus García (born May 6, 1965 ) is a retired Cuban boxer . He was world champion of amateurs in 1991 and Olympic champion in 1992 in the light middleweight division.
Career
Juan Carlos Lemus started boxing in 1980 and started for a boxing club in Pinar del Río . He boxed in the left display (normal display) and was a stocky, powerful, but also technically excellent boxer.
He made his debut at an international championship at the Junior World Championships in 1985 in Bucharest , where he, starting in the welterweight division, defeated his first four opponents, including Hans-Georg Mieling from Germany , briefly. In the final, however, he lost a little surprisingly against the Bulgarian Angel Stojanow on points (2: 3 judges' votes) and therefore had to be content with the junior vice world championship.
In 1985 he started for the first time at the Cuban championship (Playa Giron Tournament) and took 3rd place in the welterweight division behind Candelario Duvergel and Jose Luis Hernandez . Against Candelario Duvergel he lost in the final for the Cuban championship title in 1986, 1987 and 1989, while he was able to defeat him on points in 1988 and became Cuban champion for the first time. Juan Carlos Lemus then won a second Cuban championship title in 1990 when he beat Pedro Duarte on points in the final. From 1991 to 1994 he was again Cuban runner-up, beaten by Jorge Guzman (1991), Alfredo Duvergel (1992 and 1993) and Aníbal Rodríguez (1994). In 1996 he finished third behind Alfredo Duvergel and Aníbal Rodríguez.
1986 won Juan Carlos Lemus u. a. at the Intercup in Karlsruhe . In the final of the welterweight division he defeated Alexander Künzler from Germany by breaking off in the first round. In an international match towards the end of 1986, he defeated in Lake Charles also Kenneth Gould from the United States, who had recently become world champion in Reno with a victory over Candelario Duvergel .
In 1987 he defeated Alfredo Duvergel in the "Giraldo-Cordova-Cardin" tournament on points and thus qualified for the start at the Pan American Games in Indianapolis . There he defeated the welterweight Patrick Rose from Jamaica by KO id 2nd round, defeated Wayne Richards from the American Virgin Islands and Pedro Frias from the Dominican Republic by canceling in the 3rd round and won the final again over Kenneth Gould (4: 1 -Point victory). At the 1987 World Cup in Belgrade, Juan Carlos Lemus suffered a clear defeat in the final against Siegfried Mehnert from Halle (Saale) (0: 5 judges' votes).
In 1988, Juan Carlos Lemus, like his comrades from the Cuban national boxing team, suffered a bitter sporting disappointment, because a start at the Olympic Games of that year in Seoul was not possible for them, because Cuba after 1984 at the behest of Fidel Castro in Los Angeles boycotted the 1988 Olympic Games for some inexplicable reason.
In 1989 Juan Carlos Lemus lost again on points against Siegfried Mehnert at the TSC tournament in Berlin in the final of the welterweight division. At the World Cup in Moscow he met Siegfried Mehnert again in his first fight and lost again on points. So he landed on the 9th place, which was extremely unsatisfactory for him.
In 1990, Juan Carlos Lemus moved to the light middleweight division to avoid the constant training. A measure that should prove to be very successful. In 1990 there was no major international championship, but he won the World Cup in Bombay , which was almost as good as a world championship. In the final, he won over Raymond Downey from Canada on points. For the first time, a scoring machine was used that calculated a 21: 6 point win for Lemus.
1991 won Juan Carlos Lemus u. a. at the AIBA Challenge match in Bangkok in the light middleweight division against Bert Schenk from Germany by breaking off in the 2nd round. Then he won the title at the Pan American Games , which took place in Havana for the second time in his career . In the final he won over Miguel Jimenez from Puerto Rico by knocking out the first round. In the same year he succeeded in Sydney and world champion to be in the light middleweight. On the way to this success he defeated Ki Soo-choi from South Korea by breaking off in the 3rd round, Sililo Figota from New Zealand (19: 8) and David Defiagbon from Nigeria (22:13) each on points, Torsten Schmitz from Germany by breaking off id 2nd round and Israel Akopkochjan from the USSR on points (26:11).
In 1992 Juan Carlos Lemus surprisingly lost on points against Raul Marquez from the United States at the AIBA Challenge Match in Tampa (19:24). At the Olympic Games this year in Barcelona , however, he was well prepared by his coach Osmiri Fernandez, in excellent form and won with a points win over Arkadi Topajew, CIS (11: 0), a demolition win in the 1st round over Markus Beyer , Germany and points wins over Igor Saplavskis, Latvia (12: 2), György Miszei , Hungary (10: 2) and Orhan Delibas , Netherlands (6: 1), also Olympic champion .
Juan Carlos Lemus continued his career after this great victory, but was no longer used in any World Championships or Olympic Games. In 1993 he won the Central American and Caribbean Games in Ponce , Puerto Rico in the light middleweight division with four short-round victories. In 1994 he lost at the Chemistry Cup in Halle (Saale) against the German Wilko Säger on points (9:14), while in the final of the Grand Prix tournament in Ústí nad Labem he lost another German, Lutz Brors, in the 2nd round hit. His last start at an important international tournament was the Goodwill Games in Saint Petersburg in 1994 . He lost in the final against Sergej Karawajew from Russia on points after he had knocked out Dirk Dzemski from Germany in the first round in the semifinals .
