The place is on the coast of the Pacific Ocean . At the southern edge of the Noyo River flows into Noyo Bay . Mendocino is twelve kilometers south , and 220 kilometers southeast of San Francisco . The California State Route 1 runs right through Fort Bragg.

history

The indigenous people of the area were Indians , who mainly belonged to the Pomo group . The Pomo were hunter-gatherers who lived along the northern California coast. In 1856 the Mendocino Indian reservation was established near Noyo.

In 1857 a military camp was built and the site was named in honor of the commander, Captain Braxton Bragg . Ten years later the camp was abandoned and several sawmills started operating. After the opening of a port facility and a railway line, the timber trade was further intensified. In 1889 the city was officially founded. In 1906, the San Francisco earthquake was a major earthquake that destroyed almost all stone houses. The subsequent fire also destroyed a large part of the wooden houses. After twelve months, however, the city was largely rebuilt and now benefited from the fact that large quantities of timber were needed to rebuild San Francisco , which was also badly damaged by the earthquake .

From 1916 vacationers and tourists came to the very attractive place. Up to the present day the tourism industry has grown steadily with new hotels, restaurants and offers for fishing, water sports and tours to the nearby national parks and to the impressive, very high coastal redwoods ( Sequoia sempervirens ) in the area.

Glass Beach

Over the decades, the glass garbage was crushed by the ocean currents and made round by erosion. As a result, this stretch of beach is now littered with colored sea glass and is increasingly becoming a tourist attraction under the name Glass Beach .
