Mendocino is a place north of San Francisco in California in Mendocino County . Mendocino is actually not a contiguous place, it is an area with 894 inhabitants that is designated as a census-designated place , a settlement area defined for statistical purposes.

The place on the California Pacific coast is known as an artist colony. Many houses are built in traditional wood construction, today they are often lovingly cared for and restored. The many colorful cottage gardens that stretch in front of and behind the houses are somewhat atypical for the USA.

The coast to the west of the town is rough and rocky, with some sandy beaches a few miles north and south. The place is on the well-known and touristic road California State Route 1 .

The forest fire in California, which had spread at 1200 km², spread in the region at the beginning of August 2018 and was named Mendocino Complex .

Music and film

The place name was best known in Germany through Michael Holm's version of the song Mendocino ( 1969 ), a cover version of the song of the same name by the Sir Douglas Quintet . In addition, the group BZN Mendocino sang in their own song.

The film Beyond Eden was also shot here. In 2006 the Mendocino Film Festival took place there for the first time .

IT name

Mendocino was also the namesake for various IT projects.

In August 1998 , Intel presented a variant of its consumer CPU Celeron , which was nicknamed Mendocino.

Microsoft and SAP chose this location as the namesake for an integration project in April 2005 due to its geographical location between the SAP Labs in Palo Alto, California and Microsoft's headquarters in Redmond (Washington) . The aim of this Mendocino project was to link Microsoft Office programs with the SAP application platform Netweaver , which resulted in applications such as Duet .
