Mendocino is a song written by Doug Sahm in 1968 that became a number one hit in Switzerland in the version of the Sir Douglas Quintet . In Germany it reached number 2 on the charts, in the United States it reached number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100 . A German version published in 1969 with a text by Michael Holm , who also interpreted the song, reached number 3 in the German charts. The song was the best-selling of the year in Germany and was awarded a gold record . The single became a million seller in Germany, making it one of the best-selling hits and generally one of the country's best-selling singles . The success earned Holm the nickname Mr. Mendocino .

Holm, who was already writing songs for fellow pop singers such as Ricky Shayne , Siw Malmkvist , Howard Carpendale and other songs at the time of publication , actually wanted to stop singing. But he was persuaded by producer Giorgio Moroder to record Mendocino . The song made Michael Holm a popular hit star of the 1970s.

Mendocino was used as a movie song in High Fidelity . There is also a Serbo-Croatian version called Mendozino .

In 1975 Mike Krüger recorded a stupid version called Auf der Straße .
