Howard Carpendale
Howard Victor Carpendale (born January 14, 1946 in Durban , South Africa ) is a South African pop singer and composer who also has German citizenship. He had his biggest single hits in German-speaking countries in the 1970s and 1980s. He has been successful with albums since the 1980s. In the course of his career he has sold over 25 million records.
Life
Career
After a few unsuccessful attempts in his homeland as a beat singer and Elvis imitator, Carpendale moved to Europe in 1966 . His first stop was the United Kingdom , where he took various jobs, including as a singer in a beat band.
The hostess Meta Rogall from Norddeich obtained the residence permit required for him as a South African , in whose restaurant he performed for the first time in Germany. This gave him the opportunity to continue browsing through bars.
During a guest performance in Germany, Carpendale auditioned for the record company Electrola in Cologne and shortly afterwards got a contract. His first record Lifetime sold about 60,000 times. In 1969 he had his first hit in Germany with a German cover version of the Beatles song Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da . A year later he took first place at the German Schlager Competition in 1970 with The Beautiful Girl from Page One .
However, the further success initially failed, his other records sold poorly, and the record company was on the verge of terminating the contract with him. Carpendale began to compose and produce his own songs. From 1974 his own compositions like Da he took his guitar and you never catch the wind came on the market, which became commercially successful. Together with his guitarist at the time, Joachim Horn , he wrote German lyrics to well-known foreign songs such as Los hombres no deben llorar / Love me like a stranger (strangers or friends) , Lu-Le-La (your traces in the sand) , Sitting on the Dock of the Bay (poor old rich man) , Ti amo or Living Next Door To Alice (door to door with Alice) . He was also involved in the theme song for the children's TV series Meister Eder und seine Pumuckl . He was also regularly seen in the television music programs ZDF Hitparade and disco . In the former he made a comeback in 1984 with one of his greatest hits, Hello Again . The song was voted second and he also appeared in the annual show Superhitparade .
After that he wasn't as successful anymore, but had another comeback in 1994 with Ich bin da I am .
In 1999, Carpendale made a brief appearance at the end of the video clip for Le Smou from Fantastic Four . Carpendale plays Smudo self-deprecatingly, as he perceives himself after he has been brought back to the closed institution after an escape and a few escapades and is celebrated by his "fans".
Carpendale announced in February 2003 that he had multiple sclerosis ; however, the disease is largely symptom-free.
On December 13, 2003 Carpendale performed at his last concert in the Kölnarena , thus completing his resignation from show business, which had already been announced during the year. The previously successful Carpendale decided not to give any more concerts or to publish any more records. According to his own statements, he wanted to take on new challenges, for example acting. As early as 1994, he played the leading role in the RTL series Matchball , and in 2001 another leading role in the US series Dark Realm .
In 2004 Carpendale was honored with the Echo for his life's work. In the summer of 2005, his first record company, EMI Electrola, released his complete LPs from 1969 to 1990 as double CD .
On September 18, 2007 Carpendale announced in the Johannes B. Kerner Show that he would be giving ten concerts in Germany again from April 2008 . In Germany, on 2 November 2007 to be completely re-established album was released 20:10 . The title is an allusion to the fact that Carpendale used to generally be on stage around this time and his concert began. The album reached number 4 on the MediaControl charts in the first week.
In December 2012, Howard Carpendale announced that he had separated from his long-time manager Dieter Weidenfeld by mutual agreement. At the beginning of 2014 he started another tour through Germany with new songs.
Family and miscellaneous
Carpendale was the 1963 South African youth champion in the shot put . During his time in Cologne in the 1960s, Carpendale played, among other things, in the rugby Bundesliga at ASV Köln . In the 1970s he worked as a Formula 3 driver in Germany .
Howard Carpendale's first marriage was with Claudia from 1976 to 1984, but the divorce did not take place until autumn / winter 2005. The two have a son, Wayne (* 1977). Carpendale has lived with the American Donnice Pierce since 1983. They married on March 12, 2018. The son Cass (* 1988) comes from this relationship. Carpendale lives in Munich with Donnice Pierce.
Trademark
One of Howard Carpendale's trademarks is his special pronunciation of certain sounds in his German-language songs. Due to the fact that he is a native English speaker and learned the German language quite late, he pronounces certain German sounds that do not exist in English. So he speaks and sings the ego sound [ ç ] like a voiceless “sh” [ ʃ ], e.g. B. "Isch liebisch" or an "h" between two vowels like a "j", z. B. wojer instead of where from or last but not least, a long “e” sounds like the English ay in day .
