Michael Holm
Michael Holm (born July 29, 1943 in Stettin ; real name Lothar Bernhard Walter ) is a German pop singer , songwriter , lyricist , musician and music producer .
Life
After his expulsion in 1945 , Holm grew up with his twin sister Mechthild in Erlangen , where he attended the Fridericianum high school. Because of his musical ambitions, he had to change schools for the high school year. After graduating from Melanchthon High School in Nuremberg , he began studying law in West Berlin , which he finished due to the onset of musical success.
He is married for the second time, has a son and a daughter and lives in Weilheim in Upper Bavaria.
Career
At the age of 15 he founded his first band. Holm was best known as a pop singer . Holm had first publications in the early 1960s - so in 1961 with a version of Das Lied von der Liebe , Do not think about it, oh cowboy and soon you will be happy again . From 1961 to 1965 he published a few songs together with Albert Schützenberger (Boy Berger) under the pseudonym "The Missouris". Texas Jimmy , Golden Hill and Bossa Nova Baby, among others . He got his first German chart listing in 1962 with Lauter Schöne Zeiten , but he didn't have his first big hit until 1969: Mendocino , a German-language adaptation of a piece by the Sir Douglas Quintet , was the best-selling single in Germany that year . This was followed by more hits with Barefoot in the Rain (1970), Wie der Sonnenschein (1970), The Sun Shines At Night (1971), A Crazy Day (1971) and My Lady of Spain (1973). His only number 1 hit was Tears Don't Lie (1974). After that he still had to go now, Lucille? (1977) and El Lute (1979) great successes.
Years of artistic collaboration and private friendship connect him with the musician and producer Giorgio Moroder , to whom he and Giorgio and I dedicated a song. As Duo Spinach they released some singles and the LP Spinach 1 . In 1969 he composed the music for the horror film Witches Tormented to the Blood .
In 1973 Michael Holm took part in the German preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 1973 with two titles : The best thing about yourself (written by yourself ) came in ninth, " Believe" in it, twelfth and last place. In 1975 he wrote the text for Joy Fleming's competition entry A song can be a bridge . He also wrote the text for Zarah's contribution Don't Say Goodbye in the German preliminary decision in 2002.
At the end of the 1970s, he and Kristian Schultze founded the Cusco project , for which he was nominated for a Grammy for the third time in 2004. More than 20 albums have been released from this instrumental music project, which follows a completely different direction.
In addition, Holm was a copywriter, composer, producer and publisher for other artists. In the 1980s he was involved as executive producer on three albums by American artist Lisa Nemzo for Metronome Records . In 1998 he produced the Guildo Horn album Thank You , making him one of the most important figures in the hit revival at the end of the 1990s.
2004 appeared with Liebt dich! the first album by the singer Michael Holm since 1982. In 2007 his album Mal die Welt was released . The pieces from this album were played on the radio , I am missing this word , I am happy , Heart of Gold or What for . In 2010 the CD Holm was released in 2011 , u. a. with the song a thousand lies .
Cover versions
Many of Michael Holm's hits during the 1970s were - like Mendocino - German-language cover versions of successful titles by other artists that he wrote himself . Like the Sunshine was originally a French song called Fernando (1969) sung by Sheila . Before Holm released his German version, the Spanish group Los Diablos had a summer hit in Spain with Un rayo de sol .
1970 appeared dreams are free , in the original Hitchin 'A Ride by Vanity Fare .
The music at night, the sun shines , was composed by Giorgio Moroder. Almost at the same time in the late summer of 1971, the English version of his “Giorgio” was also published with the title Son of My Father , text by Pete Bellotte.
In early 1972, the British pop band Chicory Tip had a number 1 hit with this song in Great Britain . 1972 also appeared Danish version (Smil ille pie) the singer Ulla Pia .
You are crying for me is the original instrumental piece I Will Return by Phil Cordell , who landed a European hit with it at the end of 1971 under the project name "Springwater". The English original of It's nice to be with you was written by Jim Gold, who was successful with Nice to Be with You and his band Gallery in the USA . Oh oh July was again the German-language adaptation of a hit by the Spanish band Los Diablos. With its English original of My Lady of Spain was Dutch pop group The Classics 1972 successfully in their home country.
Tears don't lie is the original instrumental piece entitled Soleado , composed by the Italian Ciro Dammicco and published under his pseudonym “Zacar”. In the English-speaking world, this song became a popular Christmas song as When a Child Is Born . When the American singer Lobo also landed a top hit in Germany with I'd Love You to Want Me , Michael Holm released his German version as Baby, You're Not Alone . Tornerò from the Italian formation I Santo California also became a big hit in 1975 in German-speaking countries; Michael Holm had his third biggest success to date with his German version Waiting for me almost at the same time. Do you have to go now, Lucille? Originally from Kenny Rogers ; Lucille was a worldwide success for Rogers in the spring and summer of 1977. Boney M. already had a top hit with El Lute in the summer of 1979, before the German version with Michael Holm, written by Fred Jay, was also successful.
On his 1990 album, King Rocko Schamoni And The Explosions - Jeans And Electronics , the artist Rocko Schamoni covered Holm's song Mendocino . The piece was also released as a single in the same year. In the rock version, Rocko Schamoni sings in a duet with Michael Holm .
Others
The Schlager Mendocino , named after the Californian town of Mendocino , also serves as a template for the popular cup battle cry of the fans of FC St. Pauli and is therefore still very well known among the younger St. Pauli fans.
“Mendocino” was also the code word for the Schleyer kidnapping in 1977
Holm made a donation of 5,000 marks to Helmut Kohl , who tried to use it to compensate for the CDU's damage in the black money affair in 2000 .
2011 Michael Holm took part in the TV format Cover My Song radio station VOX part. He met the young rapper Kitty Kat , who wrote his title Mendocino into a rap : "Nobody knows my name (Mendocino)", while he presented her title Warrior in hit form. The hit was released on September 30, 2011 as a download.
