Phil Cordell (born July 17, 1947 in London , † March 31, 2007 ) was a British musician and composer who had his greatest successes in the 1970s under the pseudonyms Springwater and Dan the Banjo Man .

Life

Cordell was a member and head of the London band Tuesday's Children in the 1960s, for which he wrote some songs. When You Walk in the Sand became a Top 40 hit on Radio London in August 1966, High on a Hill in October 1966. Cordell's first solo single, Pumping the Water with B-side Red Lady , was released in 1969.

In 1971, Cordell published the instrumental piece I Will Return under the name Springwater , which was at the top of the charts almost everywhere in Western Europe, and in Switzerland the title even reached number 1 . In Germany , a German sung version by Michael Holm ( You cry for me ) was also successful (1972 place 17).

No more hits came from Springwater - I Will Return remained a one-hit wonder , but an LP was released under the title Springwater .

Phil Cordell then released a full album under the name Dan the Banjo Man, but it was not a success. The single Dan the Banjo Man was only a number one hit in Germany in 1974 , as many radio stations also used this piece as background music. The single stayed in the charts for 31 weeks. Since it was published under a different name, it is also considered a one-hit wonder. In 1977 the solo album Born Again , released under Cordell's own name, followed . Further singles until 1981, however, had no response.
