Lobo (1973)

Lobo (born Roland Kent LaVoie in Tallahassee , Florida on July 31, 1943 ) is an American musician. His greatest successes were Me and You and a Dog Named Boo in 1971 and I'd Love You to Want Me in 1972 .

biography

LaVoie grew up in Florida and was 17 years old in the band The Rumors with Gram Parsons , Jim Stafford and Jon Corneal , who later had successful music careers themselves. During his time at the University of South Florida , he was a member of the Sugar Beats. He met Phil Gernhard, who among other things was the producer of a number one hit by Maurice Williams & the Zodiacs . With him, the band recorded a single in 1964: What Am I Doing Here became a local hit. After that, LaVoie played in several other bands before he signed his own record deal with Big Tree Records in 1969, where Gernhard was now working. In the same year his first solo single was released in New York City , entitled Happy Days , which went unnoticed.

Two years later, LaVoie took the stage name Lobo (Spanish for wolf) and recorded the self-written song Me and You and a Dog Named Boo . The song was an instant hit and peaked at number 5 on the US singles chart . It was also released in Europe, where it also reached top chart positions, including number 4 in the UK and Norway. The debut album Introducing Lobo and three other singles were also successful in the US charts, but could not come close to the first hit.

He had already completed his second album in 1972, and it contained the song I'd Love You to Want Me, also written by himself . It became his biggest hit, reaching number 2 on the US charts. As a million seller , it was awarded a gold record . Lobo was only even more successful in the German-speaking countries, where it reached number 1 with a one-year delay. In Germany and Switzerland the song was at the top for 13 weeks each, in Austria for 9 weeks. The song owed this success to its use in the crime series Der Kommissar , where it was alluded to several times in the episode Strange Incidents in Professor S.'s House and triggered great demand. The German version of the song with the title Baby, you are not alone by Michael Holm was in the German charts at the same time and reached number 19.

The accompanying album Of a Simple Man was also successful and reached number 15 in Germany. In the USA it was his best-placed album with number 37 on the Billboard 200 . There he had his third top 10 hit with the release Don't Expect Me to Be Your Friend . His three biggest hits also reached number 1 on the adult contemporary charts. While the success in Europe had not yet occurred, Lobo had already released his third album Calumet in the USA in July 1973 . With three top 40 and two other chart hits, it was able to continue its success in its home country. In Germany later, only Standing at the End of the Line was the third and last song to hit the single charts .

Two more albums followed, Just a Singer and A Cowboy Afraid of Horses , each of which produced another hit single. In addition to his own publications, Lobo turned to the production of other musicians and released two albums by Jim Stafford, each together with Phil Gernhard, and the single In the Mississippi by his brother Roger LaVoie. Finally the collaboration with Phil Gernhard and the Big Tree label ended. Lobo switched to MCA / Curb Records , and it wasn't until 1979 that his comeback album Lobo was released . It was produced by Bob Montgomery, and Lobo had written only one of the ten pieces on it. The album flopped, and only Where Were You When I Was Falling in Love was another success and took it to number 1 on the AC charts for the fourth time. Holdin 'On for Dear Love was his last single on the US Hot 100 in December 1979.

He then changed labels again and founded Lobo Records, his own music publishing company in the country capital, Nashville . By 1985 he released other singles there, including with Narvel Felts and Kenny Earl under the band name Wolfpack, with whom he had even smaller successes in the US country charts. Then he withdrew from his label again. At the end of the 1980s his music experienced a new upswing in Asia, and from 1989 he released further albums in Taiwan and Singapore . A stock market crash and the collapse of his Asia label ended this phase of his career. In 2000 he found a new label in Germany and released further albums, in 2008 his so far last album Out of Time was released .
