Narvel Felts
Albert Narvel Felts (born November 11, 1938 in Keiker , Arkansas ) is an American country and rockabilly musician . Felts had a number of hits in the 1970s; his greatest success was Reconsider Me in 1975 .
Life
Childhood and youth
Narvel Felts was born in Arkansas in 1938 but grew up in Bernie , Missouri . Inspired by then-country stars like Ernest Tubb and Floyd Tillman , Felts taught himself to play the guitar . In 1956, his version of Blue Suede Shoes won a high school talent competition. It was the time of rock 'n' roll , which Felts dedicated himself to as a 17-year-old singer.
Rockabilly career
A DJ from Dexter , Missouri, heard Felts and got him a seat on KDEX radio. Soon Felts was hosting his own show on Saturday afternoons. He found his entry into the professional music business when he replaced Jerry Mercer in his band, the Rockets . Felt's first manager, a record store owner, arranged an audition for Sun Records . Felts and a band member introduced themselves to Jack Clement , who sent the two home with advice to write a few songs. After the first unsuccessful attempt, Felts returned to Sun with the entire band for a short time and held his first session, during which, among other things, Cry Baby Cry was recorded. However, none of the recorded songs were released by Sun.
Felts and the Rockets returned to Missouri. They were discovered by an employee of Mercury Records while performing in St. Louis . In the following time five rockabilly singles were recorded, all of which appeared until 1958, but remained unsuccessful. In 1960 Felts reached the bottom of the charts for the first time with Honey Love , but he was denied further successes.
Felts and the Rockets then moved to MGM Records , but no records were released. Felts continued his career through the 1960s, but focused more on his family. He continued to perform and made some minor records for local labels.
breakthrough
1973 Felts had his breakthrough as a country singer. He signed with the Cinnamon label, and his second single, Drift Away , was in the top ten Hot Country Songs . A number of other hits followed such as All in the Name of Love (1973) and I Want to Stay (1974). After his record company had to close in 1975, Felts, still accompanied by the Rockets, switched to ABC - Dot , where he was able to continue his successful streak. At ABC-Dot, he had his biggest hit with Reconsider Me , which came in second. Further chart placements followed and in 1978 another big hit with Run for the Roses . However, he was denied the top position in the charts.
Felts lost his contract with ABC-Dot when the label was bought by MCA Records . In the mid-1970s, his road manager fired Rockets and hired a new band called Wild Country . The collaboration with Wild Country didn’t last long, and the band started their highly successful career without Felts under the name Alabama .
Felts formed a new band in the late 1970s, the Driftaways . With her he became a permanent guest at the Hemsby Rock'n'Roll Weekend and, due to the rockabilly revival, became very popular with rockabilly fans in Europe.
In the 1980s, Felts turned more to gospel . Today he still appears in country and rockabilly shows.
