Runaway is a 1960 song written by Del Shannon and Max Crook that, when released by Del Shannon, became an international hit and a number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 . In the Netherlands, the song came to number 2 on the charts. It was voted number 466 of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time by the US music magazine Rolling Stone in 2004.

Singer and guitarist Del Shannon and keyboardist Max Crook (1936-2020) played together in a band that won a record deal in 1960. Crook at that time had one on the Clavioline invented based instrument that Musitron. After the first recordings for the record deal were not particularly successful, they were persuaded by their manager to re-record a previously written song Little Runaway and to emphasize the characteristic sound of the musitron. The song was released in 1961 and was an instant hit. By the band's appearance on Dick Clark's Show , American Bandstand, the song eventually reached number one on the US charts. Shortly thereafter, the song also became a number one hit on the UK charts. However, a new recording from 1967 did not reach the Billboard Hot 100. In 1986, another new recording served as the theme song for the US crime series Crime Story .

The song has been covered many times, including by Traveling Wilburys , Elvis Presley , The McCoys , Bonnie Raitt , Small Faces , Avenged Sevenfold (2017) and Queen + Paul Rodgers (2008). In 1975 the singer Dave reached number 1 in the French charts with Vanina , a freely translated version.
