Heinz-Dieter Zeh , often quoted by HD Zeh, (* May 8, 1932 in Braunschweig ; † April 15, 2018 in Freudenstadt ) was a German theoretical physicist who deals with nuclear physics , the fundamentals of quantum mechanics ( decoherence ) and other fundamental questions of physics how busy the physics of the arrow of time.

Live and act

Zeh initially dealt with nuclear physics at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg under J. Hans D. Jensen and investigated with Hans-Jörg Mang the formation of alpha particles in nuclei. In 1966 he was a lecturer in Heidelberg. In 1964/65 he was research assistant at Caltech , in 1965 and 1967/68 at the University of California, San Diego . He later became a professor in Heidelberg. He has been dealing with the fundamental problems of quantum mechanics since the 1960s , in particular with the Many Worlds interpretation of Hugh Everett III , whereby he became one of the founders of the theory of decoherence in the 1980s by investigating questions left open Years of Wojciech Zurek , Zeh, Erich Joos (also in Heidelberg), Claus Kiefer (who did his doctorate at Zeh) and others.

Zeh wrote a standard work on the direction of time ( arrow of time ) in physics, whose equations on the microscopic level are predominantly symmetrical with respect to the direction of time.

Zeh died in April 2018 while on vacation in the Black Forest and was buried in Waldhilsbach .
