Wojciech Hubert Zurek (* 1951 ) is an American - Polish theoretical physicist who deals with the fundamentals of quantum mechanics , information theoretical aspects of physics and astrophysics .

Live and act

Zurek attended high school in Bielsko-Biała , studied at the Technical University of Krakow (diploma 1974) and received his doctorate in 1979 from the University of Austin with John Archibald Wheeler . He then worked at Caltech (two years as Richard Chace Tolman Fellow) with Murray Gell-Mann and at Los Alamos National Laboratory , where he was a J. Robert Oppenheimer Fellow from 1984, was group leader for theoretical astrophysics from 1991 to 1996 and has been a fellow since 1996 of the laboratory is. He also teaches at the Institute of Theoretical Physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara , where he directed the Quantum Computing and Chaos Theory program , and at the Isaac Newton Institute in Cambridge , where he directed the Complexity, Computation and Physics of Information program.

Zurek is one of the leading scientists and co-founder of the decoherence interpretation of quantum mechanics. He is also known for his no-cloning theorem (with William Wootters ) from 1982.

He is an external member of the cosmology program of the Canadian Institute of Advanced Research and founder of the network "Complexity, Entropy and Physics of Information" at the Santa Fe Institute , of which he was an external member. In 2004/05 he was a Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar. He has been a Fellow of the American Physical Society since 2009 . In 2009 he received the Marian Smoluchowski Medal .
