Claus Kiefer

Claus Kiefer (born April 25, 1958 in Karlsruhe ) is a German university professor for theoretical physics who deals with the fundamentals of quantum mechanics ( decoherence , also in the context of quantum gravity), astrophysics ( black hole theory ) and quantum gravity .

life and work

Kiefer studied physics and astronomy at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg and the University of Vienna . In 1988 he did his doctorate with Dieter Zeh in Heidelberg on the concept of time in quantum gravity (“The concept of inner time in the canonical quantum theory of gravitation”). In 1988/89 he was a research assistant in Heidelberg, 1989 to 1993 at the University of Zurich and 1993 to 2001 at the University of Freiburg , where he completed his habilitation in 1995 with Hartmann Römer . In 2001 he became professor for theoretical physics at the University of Cologne . He was also visiting fellows at the Isaac Newton Institute of Cambridge University , 1996 at the University of Tours , 2004 at the University of Montpellier and 1999 at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin .

Kiefer is the author of several popular scientific, scientifically exact books, including an introduction to quantum theory and gravitational physics, and a specialist book on quantum gravity. He also translated books by John Archibald Wheeler and Stephen Hawking .

In 1996 he became deputy chairman and in 2000 chairman of the Association for Gravitation and Relativity of the German Physical Society (until 2004). Since 1998 he has been on the advisory board of the Annalen der Physik, since 2010 on the advisory board of the journal Classical and Quantum Gravity (until 2015) and since 2014 on the editorial board of the journal General Relativity and Gravitation. Since 2009 he has been co-editor of the “Fundamental Theories of Physics” series from Springer Verlag. In 2009 he won a second prize from the Foundational Questions Institute, USA for his essay "Does time exist in quantum gravity?" In 2010 he was elected as a full member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts . In 2012 he received the first prize of the Gravity Research Foundation for the essay "Can Effects of Quantum Gravity Be Observed in the Cosmic Microwave Background?" (Together with Manuel Krämer). In 2013 he was awarded the Hanno and Ruth Roelin Prize for Science Journalism. From 2012 to 2014 he was a board member for public relations in the German Physical Society .
