Wilbert McClure , aka Skeeter , (born October 29, 1938 in Toledo , Ohio , USA - † August 7, 2020 ) was an American middleweight boxer .

amateur

McClure won the national "Golden Gloves" tournament in 1958, as well as the American light middleweight championship in 1959 and 1960. He also took first place in his weight class at the Pan American Games in Chicago in 1959 .

He was then nominated for the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome , where he won the gold medal in the light middleweight division. In the final he defeated the Italian Carmelo Bossi on points.

Professional career

He began his professional career of fourteen wins in 1961. In January 1963 he defeated the Croatian Nick Marić in Dortmund and in December 1967 he lost to the British Johnny Pritchett in London . Apart from these two fights, McClure fought exclusively in the United States. In 1966 he boxed Rubin Carter twice , lost the first fight and reached a draw in the second encounter. In 1970 he ended his career.
