Carmelo Bossi (born October 15, 1939 in Milan , † March 23, 2014 ibid) was an Italian light middleweight boxer.
amateur
In 1959 he took second place in the welterweight division at the European Championships in Lucerne ; he lost the final battle there against the Pole Leszek Drogosz .
Bossi then won at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome , the silver medal in the light middleweight . In the final he was defeated by the American Wilbert McClure .
Professional career
It was not until 1961 that he switched to the professional camp. In October 1965 he became Italian welterweight champion and defended this title once. He became European welterweight champion in May 1967 by winning points over Frenchman Jean Josselin . After he was able to defend the title in August against the British John Cooke , he tried his hand at the world welterweight title in November. In Johannesburg he met the South African Willie Ludick , who had defeated him shortly before, and also lost this fight on points. He remained European champion after defending his title in May 1968 against his old opponent Jean Josselin. In August of the same year, however, he lost the European title to the Dutchman Edwin "Fighting Mack" Arthur after a knockout blow in the tenth round. The plan to regain this title failed in April 1970 when the Austrian Hans Orsolics defeated him on points.
His move to light middleweight paid off in the next fight. In Monza in July 1970 he defeated the American Fred Little and became world champion according to the WBA and WBC versions. Against the Spaniard José Hernández Bossi was able to defend his title with a draw in April 1971. But in October he had to give both belts to the Japanese Kōichi Wajima . This was the reason for Bossi to end his boxing career.
