Frank Tate (born August 27, 1964 in Detroit ) is a retired American boxer. He is the brother of Thomas Tate.

amateur

Tate won the National Golden Gloves in 1983 and became US amateur champions. In the same year he beat Alexander Koschkin , Soviet Union , in an international match . At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles , he won the gold medal in the light middleweight division; Among other things, with an extremely controversial final victory over the Canadian Shawn O'Sullivan , who had defeated him in the final battle of the North American Championships in 1983. He was counted twice in the second round, so that even his trainer Emanuel Steward was embarrassed about the score. His record was 125-15.

professional

Tate became a professional middleweight in the same year, won his first 22 fights and on October 10, 1987 the vacant IBF title, which middleweight world champion Marvin Hagler did not want to defend, against the undefeated Michael Olajide over 15 rounds on points. He lost the belt after two title defenses in 1988 against the undefeated southpaw Michael Nunn by knockout.

He then rose to the newly introduced super middleweight division and lost there in January 1990 a fight for the vacant IBF World Championship against Lindell Holmes. He then moved to the light heavyweight division and beat Uriah Grant, Yawe Davis and 1992 Olympic champion Andrew Maynard .

On September 29, 1992 he boxed against Virgil Hill for the vacant WBA title and lost over twelve rounds on points. Also in the 1994 rematch he was defeated by Hill.

In 1997 he won the insignificant WBU title against the German Norbert Nieroba, which he never defended. After a knockout loss to David Telesco, he ended his career in 1998.
