Andrew Maynard (born April 8, 1964 in Laurel , Maryland ) is a retired American boxer.

amateur

Maynard was American amateur light heavyweight champion in 1987 and 1988. At the Pan American Games in Indianapolis in 1987 , he finished third.

In the Olympic elimination, he beat Al Cole among others and was able to qualify for the Olympic Games in Seoul . There he won the gold medal with victories against the Samoan Mikaele Masoe, the Hungary Lajos Eros, the Poland Henryk Petrich and in the final against Nurmagomed Schanawasow from the Soviet Union .

professional

In 1989 he switched to the professional camp. After twelve fights, he faced ex-world champion Bobby Czyz in June 1990 and was knocked out in the seventh round. After a few more victories, including an early success against Matthew Saad Muhammad , he was knocked out again in January 1992 against Frank Tate , another Olympic champion. On October 16, 1993, he then undeservedly received a world championship fight in cruiserweight against the WBC title holder Anaclet Wamba, who clearly defeated him on points and also had on the ground.

He later lost to the French Nicoletta and went to Egerton Marcus KO. An aging Thomas Hearns won against him with a first-round knockout, and the former Olympic champion Torsten May also beat him prematurely. In 2000 he ended his career after 13 losses in forty fights.
