Career

Zhang Xiaoping is from the Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region. He is 1.88 m tall and weighs about 81 kg. He turned to boxing in his youth.

The first result known from him is the 2nd place in the Chinese championship 2005. He lost this year in the final of this championship in the light heavyweight division against Lei Yuping . In the course of 2006, Zhang Xiaoping succeeded in replacing the then leading Chinese light heavyweight boxer Lei Yuping and becoming the No. 1 in China in this weight class.

In May 2006 he started in the Chinese national relay, which stayed in Havana for two international matches against Cuba . Zhang Xiaoping lost the first light heavyweight fight against Yusiel Napoles on points (3:13), but won the second fight against Yanier Lescuy (18:15). In the same year he also started at the Asian Games in Doha. He was defeated there in the round of 16 against Dschachan Kurbanow from Tajikistan on points and finished in 9th place in the final statement.

In 2007, with a view to the Olympic Games in Beijing, intensive promotion of Chinese boxers began. Zhang Xiaoping also benefited from this. This was already evident at the Asian Championships in Ulaanbaatar . Zhang won there against Mehdi Ghorbani from Iran on points (15:12), then defeated Dschachan Kurbanow on points (24:11) and also won over Ri Jong Bom from North Korea on points (22: 7). Only in the final did he lose against Abbos Atoyev from Uzbekistan on points (3: 6) and came in second.

At the 2007 World Championships in Chicago he won over Jasveer Singh from India (17: 3) and Gottlieb Weiss from Germany (17:13) on points. In the last sixteen he lost to Yerkabulan Shinaliyev from Kazakhstan on points and ended up in 9th place.

Zhang Xiaoping won the right to start the Olympic Games in Beijing at the Olympic qualification tournament in January 2008 in Bangkok . He won there again over Mehdi Ghorbani and then defeated Dinesh Kumar from India on points (25: 7). With that he won his right to start. In the final battle he gave up in the third round, slightly injured against Dschachan Kurbanow.

At the Olympic Games themselves, Zhang Xiaoping was by no means a favorite. There he defeated Mourad Sahroroui from Tunisia on points (3: 1) in the first fight and clearly won on points (8: 2) in the second fight against Vice World Champion Artur Beterbijew from Russia . After this victory at the latest, he was one of the favorites for the gold medal . With victories over Abdelhafid Benchabla from Algeria (12: 7), Yerkabulan Shinaliyev (+4: 4) and Kenneth Egan from Ireland , he actually managed to win the Olympic Games, although his victory over Yerkabulan Shinaliyev was extremely close.
