In 1982 he was the first Yugoslavian middleweight champion (-75kg), but did not get past the second round due to an injury at the World Championships after defeating Hans Gottsmann, Germany (5-0). In 1983 he was champion of the Balkans in the light heavyweight division (-81kg). At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles , he became an Olympic champion. The best-known opponent of his career, which lasted only ten fights, was the American Matthew Saad Muhammad , whom he defeated on points in May 1991 over eight rounds.
