Anton Josipović (born October 22, 1961 in Banja Luka , Republic of Bosnia , Yugoslavia ) is a former Yugoslav boxer of Croatian nationality.

amateur

In 1982 he was the first Yugoslavian middleweight champion (-75kg), but did not get past the second round due to an injury at the World Championships after defeating Hans Gottsmann, Germany (5-0). In 1983 he was champion of the Balkans in the light heavyweight division (-81kg). At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles , he became an Olympic champion. He beat Germany's Markus Bott , Germany (4: 1), and Mustapha Moussa , Algeria (5: 0). When in the other semi-final pairing the top favorite Evander Holyfield was disqualified against Kevin Barry by the Yugoslav referee Gligorije Novičić due to a knockout blow after the final gong and Barry was therefore no longer allowed to compete in the final, he won gold without a fight.

professional

In 1990 Josipović turned professional. The best-known opponent of his career, which lasted only ten fights, was the American Matthew Saad Muhammad , whom he defeated on points in May 1991 over eight rounds. After a more than 2.5-year break from fighting, he lost two duels against Asmir Vojnović in 1994 and 1995 for the Croatian championship in cruiserweight and then ended his career.
