Egerton Marcus (born February 2, 1965 in Georgetown (Guyana) ) is a former Canadian boxer of Guyanese origin.

amateur

Egerton Marcus, whose uncle Charlie Amos for Guyana took part in the 1968 Olympic Games , was Canadian champion in 1985 in the light heavyweight division (-81 kg) and in 1986 and 1987 in the middleweight division (-75 kg).

Marcus finished second in the light heavyweight division at the 1985 World Cup tournament in Seoul , but lost to Nurmagomed Schanawazow from the Soviet Union prematurely in the final . In the same year he also won the North American Championships. In 1986 he failed for Canada starting in the middleweight division (up to 75 kg) at the amateur world championship in Reno in the first round of the tournament at Cuban Julio Quintana. At the 1988 Seoul Olympics the powerful Marcus go against the first two opponents KOs . In the quarter-finals he defeated Sven Ottke on points, but broke his batting hand on the way to the final and had no chance against Henry Maske there .

professional

In 1989 he moved to the professional camp, but also as a professional in the light heavyweight division , he had constant injury concerns. Above all, his hands caused him problems, which on the one hand made him barely box (only 14 fights in the first six years) and on the other hand took away his clout. For example, he could not prematurely defeat Earl Butler, who had been knocked out several times, and neither did Guy Stafford, who had lost the last four fights, including against a super middleweight by knocking out. The only known name on his record was Olympic champion Andrew Maynard , who had previously been knocked out several times and was not among the world class in the professional field. Maynard lost prematurely because he gave up. Marcus couldn't knock him out classically either, as he had done in rows as an amateur. He also had major weight problems, although the light heavyweight of the professionals was four kg above the amateur middleweight limit.

He got his only World Championship fight on February 11, 1995 against his old opponent Mask, but did not have the energy to make the fight evenly and lost high on points. He never boxed in this class again. But also in the cruiserweight division he was completely unsuccessful, he reached a draw and was knocked out against the rather weak Brian LaSpada. He fought his last fights as a heavyweight. After another premature loss in the fight for the Canadian heavyweight championship against Donovan Ruddock , he ended his career.
