Life

Steward's parents separated already during his childhood. He moved to Detroit with his mother at the age of 12. There he started boxing and trained at the Brewster Recreation Center , where Joe Louis had previously trained.

Steward, who learned the profession of electrician, was 1963 as an amateur boxer "National Golden Gloves Champion" in bantamweight. Despite this success and a match record of 94 wins and 3 losses, he never became a professional.

From 1971 Steward worked as a professional boxing trainer. He was the boss of the Kronk stable in Detroit , his first boxer to win a world title was Duane Thomas in 1980 (WBA lightweight world champion). Until the 1990s he mainly trained powerful boxers in the lower weight classes. It was not until Michael Moorer that he had a well-known heavyweight who left him after his victory over Bert Cooper . Steward mentored Evander Holyfield in his only win over Riddick Bowe and Oliver McCall in his win over Lennox Lewis . After this fight Steward changed sides and remained coach of Lennox Lewis until the end of his career. In the meantime he worked for, among others, Naseem Hamed , Óscar de la Hoya and Julio César Chávez .

Steward had diverticulitis . He died on October 25, 2012 in a Detroit hospital at the age of 68. Until his death he was the coach of heavyweight world champion Wladimir Klitschko .
