professional

He turned professional middleweight in 1984 and won his first thirty fights until he was able to win the IBF middleweight title by technical knockout in round nine on July 28, 1988 against the unbeaten Olympic champion Frank Tate . He then defended against the highly respected veteran Juan Roldán and even knocked Sumbu Kalambay out in the first round. He won against Iran Barkley by a narrow margin, then beat former welterweights Marlon Starling and Donald Curry . In his sixth title defense, he met the then unknown James Toney on May 10, 1991 and surprisingly lost his title, clearly leading on points, in the eleventh round by a technical knockout.

He then moved up to the super middleweight and won on September 12, 1992 disputed against Victor Cordoba the WBA title. He won the direct rematch clearly and then defended the WBA title against Crawford Ashley and Merqui Sosa , but lost it in February 1994 to the unknown Steve Little . The attempt to regain the title against Frankie Liles in Ecuador in December 1994 ended in a point defeat. In February 1993 he also won the IBF super middleweight championship fight against Danny Morgan (USA) in Mexico City after a technical knockout in round 1.

He then rose to the light heavyweight division and played one last title fight on March 21, 1998 in the Max-Schmeling-Halle , Berlin against Graciano Rocchigiani , but lost again on points. His last notable victory was in 1999 against William Guthrie . In 2002 he ended his career.
