Frontignan Town Hall

Frontignan ( Occitan : Frontinhan ) is a town in the department of Herault in the region Occitan in southern France . It has 22,762 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017). The inhabitants are called "Frontignanais" . However, the inhabitants of the incorporated town of La Peyrade still feel that they belong to the closer town of Sète than Frontignan.

Frontignan is located seven kilometers northeast of the city ​​of Sète on the road to Montpellier (21 km). Neighboring municipalities are Gigean in the north, Vic-la-Gardiole in the northeast, Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone in the east, Sète in the southwest and Balaruc-les-Bains and Balaruc-le-Vieux in the west. In the south the municipality is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea . The Rhône-Sète Canal runs through the city .

history

  • 1362: first fortification
  • 1560: the fortress is razed by the Protestants
  • June 16, 1642: King Ludwig XIII. and Cardinal Richelieu meet in Frontignan.
  • 1787: Thomas Jefferson , future President of the United States of America, stays in Frontignan
  • June 25, 1944: The Frontignan oil refinery and parts of the city (including the train station) are bombed by the US Air Force; 40 deaths among the population are to be mourned.
  • December 31, 2002: Frontignan is incorporated into the Bassin de Thau municipal association with the neighboring towns of Sète , Balaruc , Vic, Mireval , Gigean and Marseillan .

economy

The main branch of the economy is summer tourism in the southern district of Frontignan-Plage, directly on the Gulf of Lion (Mediterranean Sea).

Viticulture is also of great importance . Only Muscat is grown in Frontignan , from which the fruity-spicy sweet wine Muscat de Frontignan is pressed. The wine cooperative Frontignan Coopérative is the largest producer. In addition, 24 independent winemakers market their products themselves.

From 1900 to 1986 an oil refinery was operated in Frontignan. Today there is only one large tank farm on their premises.

Since the last decade of the 20th century, the industry has concentrated on fishing operations and the plastics processing industry.
