The arrondissement of Montpellier is an administrative unit of the French department of Hérault in the Occitanie region . The capital (seat of the prefecture ) is Montpellier .
It consists of 16 cantons and 67 municipalities. On November 1, 2009, the cantons of Aniane , Ganges and Saint-Martin-de-Londres moved from the arrondissement of Montpellier to the arrondissement of Lodève .

Reorganization of the arrondissements in 2017
As a result of the reorganization of the arrondissements in 2017, the arrondissement of Montpellier became the area of the 26 municipalities of Assas , Buzignargues , Cazevieille , Claret , Combaillaux , Ferrières-les-Verreries , Fontanès , Guzargues , Lauret , Le Triadou , Les Matelles , Murles , Saint- Bauzille-de-Montmel , Saint-Clément-de-Rivière , Sainte-Croix-de-Quintillargues , Saint-Gély-du-Fesc , Saint-Hilaire-de-Beauvoir , Saint-Jean-de-Cornies , Saint-Jean- de-Cuculles , Saint-Mathieu-de-Tréviers , Saint-Vincent-de-Barbeyrargues , Sauteyrargues , Teyran , Vacquières , Vailhauquès and Valflaunès are assigned to the Lodève arrondissement .
Instead, the area of the municipality of Marseillan changed from the arrondissement of Béziers to the arrondissement of Montpellier.
