Marseillan ( Occitan Massilhàn ) is a French commune with 7778 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hérault department in the Occitania region .
The name of the red grape variety Marselan is based on the place name, since the first test areas for the variety were created here.
geography
The French fishing village is about 50 kilometers from Montpellier on the Mediterranean coast . Other adjacent waters are the Canal du Midi and the Étang de Thau , and nearby towns are Agde and Sète . The seaside resort of Marseillan-Plage , which was founded in 1947, is located four kilometers from the actual town center, directly on the coast . A 3-day 70-year anniversary celebration was celebrated in 2017.
history
Marseillan there is a built 1911-1920 theater in the Italian style, the oldest Marianne statue of France and the Church of St-Jean-Baptiste. This was built in the 17th century on the ground of a Romanesque church built in the 11th century, some parts of which are still there. The organ of the church has been in the inventaire des monuments historiques since 1982 . The well-known Vermouth Noilly Prat is also produced in Marseillan . It is available in white, red or amber (but the ambre is only sold within the region).
The community has two ports: The port at the Étang de Thau in the village used to be a trading port and is currently used as a marina. There is also one of the bases of the Les Glénans sailing school . The port on the Mediterranean coast is used for mussel fishermen and water sports.
