Vendargues is a French commune with 6,232 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hérault department in the Occitanie region . It belongs to the arrondissement of Montpellier and is part of the canton of Le Crès . The inhabitants are called Vendarguois (es) .
geography
Vendargues is about 13 kilometers east of Montpellier between Cadoule and Salaison . Vendargues is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Castries in the north and northeast, Baillargues in the east, Saint-Aunès in the south and southeast, Le Crès in the southwest, Jacou in the west and Teyran in the northwest.
The former national routes 110 and 113 run through the municipalities .
history
According to legend, the place name goes back to a Roman legionnaire named Venerianicus from the troops of Augustus. The place was first mentioned under this name in 924.
