Pignan ( Occitan : Pinhan ) is a French commune in the Hérault department in the Occitanie region . It has 7019 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) and is the capital of the canton of the same name . The inhabitants are called "Pignanais" .
geography
Pignan is about eleven kilometers west-southwest of Montpellier . Pignan is surrounded by the neighboring communities Murviel-lès-Montpellier in the north, Saint-Georges-d'Orques in the northeast, Lavérune in the east, Saussan and Fabrègues in the south, Cournonterral in the southwest and west and Saint-Paul-et-Valmalle in the northwest. Pignan is part of the Vin de pays des Collines de la Moure wine region .
