Villetelle ( Occitan : Vilatèla ) is a place and a municipality with 1,433 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hérault department in the Occitania region in southern France .
location
The place Villetelle lies on the river Vidourle at an altitude of approx. 15 to 20 m above sea level. d. M. on the border with the neighboring department of Gard . The canton capital Lunel is only about 8 km (driving distance) south; the city of Montpellier is around 31 km southwest.

The population remained relatively constant until the 1970s. As a result of the relative proximity to Montpellier, increasing tourism and the comparatively low property prices, Villetelle has seen a significant increase in population over the past few decades.
economy
The inhabitants of the community lived for centuries as a self-sufficient living from agriculture (grain, wine, vegetables) and a little cattle breeding; the town of Lunel came into question as a market place because of its comparatively short distance . Since the 1960s, tourism (holiday apartments, hotels, restaurants, etc.) has played an increasingly important role in the local economy.
history
Little is known about the history of Villetelle; the Roman settlement ( oppidum ) Ambrussum, located about 550 m southeast of today's town, was formerly on the Via Domitia , the main connection between Italy and the Roman provinces of Gallia Narbonensis and Tarraconensis . The current parish church dates from the late 12th or early 13th century.
Attractions
- The small late Romanesque parish church of Saint-Guiraud has a polygonal broken apse . The entrance is - as usual in the region - on the south side; the view of the west facade is blocked by a house that was added later.
- The hinterland of the place with its vineyards is extremely attractive. On a clear day you can even see the summit of Mont Ventoux, about 80 km away (as the crow flies) .
- The ruins of the Roman settlement Ambrussum with the nearby Pont Ambroix are worth a trip. They were recognized as a Monument historique in 1974 ; the bridge, which was still double-arched until a flood in 1933, was classified as a monument historique in 1840 .
