Mauguio ( Occitan Mauguòu ) is a French commune with 16,919 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hérault department in the Occitania region ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Montpellier and is the administrative seat of the canton of Mauguio .
geography
The city is about ten kilometers east of Montpellier . Neighboring municipalities to Mauguio are:
- Baillargues in the north,
- Mudaison in the northeast,
- Candillargues , Lansargues and Marsillargues in the east,
- La Grande-Motte in the southeast,
- Pérols and Lattes in the southwest,
- Montpellier to the west as well
- Saint-Aunès in the north-west.
Almost the entire lagoon lake Étang de l'Or (also: Étang de Mauguio ) and part of the dune strip between Palavas-les-Flots and La Grande-Motte , which separates the lake from the open sea, belongs to the municipality . The seaside resort of Carnon is also located here , as Mauguio is often called Mauguio-Carnon today.
The municipal area is crossed by the Salaison and Cadoule rivers, as well as a few smaller streams, all of which drain into the lake. The city borders in the north on the irrigation canal Canal d'irrigation du Bas-Rhône Languedoc , which runs eastward to the Petit Rhône .
Transport links
The municipal seat is on the department road D189 with Lattes connected. In the extreme northwest, the municipality is touched by the A9 motorway (Montpellier - Nîmes ), which then runs further north. Montpellier Airport is located on the western municipal boundary .
history
Mauguio, or rather Melgueil, its earlier name, was a prosperous city in the Middle Ages . The Counts of Melgueil ruled Montpellier , and the Denier melgorien was defeated in the place, whose importance corresponded to that of Toulouse . From this time only one moth has survived, the castle was destroyed in the wars of religion.
