Midoun ( Arabic ميدون, DMG Mīdūn ) is a city with around 32,000 and the capital of a delegation with around 65,000 inhabitants in the Medenine governorate in the northeast of the Tunisian island of Djerba .

location

Midoun lies at a height of approx. 15 m above sea level. d. M. in the northeast of the island of Djerba about 15 km from the capital Houmt Souk in the middle of date and fruit groves.

economy

For centuries, Midoun was one of many villages, where the people lived from agriculture. It was not until the second half of the 20th century that tourism began to play an important role on Djerba. While the tourist hotels were mainly located on the coast, cities in the hinterland developed into commercial, service and administrative centers.

history

Midoun used to be a transshipment point for slaves from Africa . They were brought through the Sahara to this small town and sold there to northern or central Tunisia . Some descendants of those slaves who found new masters directly in Midoun still live in the city .

Cityscape

  • Typical for the city are fortress-like residential complexes that are shielded from the street by thick walls. In the center of the city is the Place Meninx , where the regular markets take place. Under this square there is still an oil mill ( Maasera ), which can be recognized by its small white dome .
  • The city is modern and has restaurants, cafes and small supermarkets. Every Friday the large market takes place in the large market square, where local art, souvenirs , food such as fruit and fish, and fake branded products are sold.
  • The Lalla Hadria Museum shows numerous exhibits on the history of Islamic art .
  • About four kilometers north, on the road to Houmt Souk , is the Fadhloun Mosque . Since it is no longer used for prayers, non-Muslims can also visit it.
