Montrachet (or Le Montrachet) is a wine location classified as Grand Cru on the Côte d'Or in French Burgundy . It is located in the communes of Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet in the Côte de Beaune . The Montrachet site has had its own appellation since July 31, 1937 and, with a size of 7.9980 hectares, is one of the smaller appellations in France. Only white wine is produced . Of this, 4.0107 ha are in the municipality of Puligny; the remaining 3.9873 hectares belong to the municipality of Chassagne. The wines of the predominantly south-facing vineyards of Chassagne have the reputation of being more massive and fat, those of Puligny finer and more elegant.

The location has been known since the 13th century and was successively known under the names Mons Rachicencis , Mont Rachaz , Mont Rachat and from the 15th century as Montrachat . By Alexandre Dumas the Elder , the statement is handed down, the wine of Montrachet should be drinking on their knees and with drawn hat .

In general, the wines of Montrachet are among the most expensive white wines in the world. The land used is correspondingly expensive. In a transaction in 2007, the financial institution Crédit Foncier (owner of the Château de Puligny-Montrachet) paid a price of 3.5 million francs (533,572 euros) for an ouvrée (428 m²). The Montrachet is a Clos with its enclosure wall .

Climate and geology

The Montrachet vineyard is located on a ten percent steep slope at a height of 255 - 270 m above sea level . The situation is usually spared late frosts. Otherwise, the conditions of Burgundy apply - a transitional climate in which continental influences predominate over maritime influences. The Chardonnay thrives excellently in a southeast orientation.

The bottom of the Montrachet consists of a 50 cm thick layer of brown limestone - weathered debris . The vines must drive their roots into the base from the geological age of Bathonium .

Wine

As vine training in France is méthode Guyot espalier-type training called prescribed.

The white wines of the Grand Cru Lage are made from the Chardonnay grape variety. The natural alcohol content of the white wines must be at least 12% by volume, chaptalization is allowed - as everywhere in Burgundy. The minimum must weight is 187 g / l. The basic yield is 40 hectoliters per hectare, this may be exceeded by a maximum of 20%.

Production quantity

In 2008, a total of 7.99 hectares were declared under the name Montrachet and 349 hectoliters of white wine were produced. This corresponds to approximately 47,000 bottles.
