Clos (vineyard)

The Clos is the French term for a walled vineyard (of clos - closed or closture now clôture, single or enclosure). They were often created by monks such as the Cistercians and Benedictines . Many famous vineyards or wineries have this designation in their name, even if their wall no longer exists today. Well-known Clos in France are:

Clos de Vougeot
Niersteiner Bell

In French-speaking Switzerland , the following should be mentioned:

  • Vaud : Clos des Abbayes, Clos des Moines ( Dézaley ), Clos du Paradis ( Aigle ), Clos du Rocher, Clos des Rennauds ( Yvorne )
  • Valais : Clos Grand Brûlé, Clos des Montibeux ( Leytron ), Clos de Balavaud ( Vétroz )
