Steinberg near Eberbach Monastery

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Steinberg is a single German location in the Rheingau wine-growing region in Hesse . It is located in the Hattenheim district of the municipality of Eltville am Rhein and, with 37.2 hectares, is the largest location in the Rheingau. The vineyard is planted exclusively with Riesling grapes from which top-quality wines are produced, such as the legendary Steinberger Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese 1921. The Steinberg domain, which belongs to the Hessian state winery Kloster Eberbach , is 34 hectares in size. This is bordered all around with a natural stone wall.

The Steinberg is one of the best vineyards in the Rheingau. The history is closely connected with the Neuhof and the Eberbach monastery and goes back to the 12th century.

Since the German Wine Law of 1971, the Steinberg has been the only individual vineyard in the Rheingau, along with Schloss Johannisberg , Schloss Reichartshausen and Schloss Vollrads , that is considered a separate district and can therefore simply be labeled as Steinberger without giving a place name .

Geographical location and geology

The Steinberg lies on the edge of the forest on a steep southwest slope. The soil is interspersed with sand, gravel, clayey loam and slate . Stone slate predominates in the upper part of the slope. The buildings of the Steinberg domain are located on the eastern edge of the vineyard on a ridge 200  m above sea level. NHN on the state road L 3320 from Hattenheim to Eberbach monastery. From here farm roads open up the vineyard. The highest point of the Steinberg is in the north corner about 270  m above sea level. NHN high, and the lowest point is in the southern tip beyond the Neuhof domain at about 150  m above sea level. NHN .

The vineyard was initially surrounded by a hedge. This was finally replaced by a 2,600 meter long slate-covered high quarry stone wall completed on August 2, 1767. Since then, the Steinberg has been considered a Clos due to the walling . It served to protect the vineyard, especially from grape thieves, and also favors the microclimate .

In the work "Der Nassauische Weinbau" published by Friedrich Wilhelm Dünkelberg in 1867, the Steinberg is classified as one of 13 top locations in class I after the first comprehensive classification of the Rheingau vineyards.

history

The Steinberg was laid out by the Cistercian monks of the nearby Eberbach Monastery , who began around 1170 to combine individual parcels into a large vineyard through purchase and exchange. About half of the area was fallow land that first had to be cultivated. At the same time, they created today's Neuhof domain below the Steinberg . Since the abolition of the monastery after the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss of 1803, the Steinberg was a state domain , first a Nassau, later a Prussian and then a Hessian state domain.

The Steinberg is in the sole ownership of the Hessian state winery Kloster Eberbach , who manage one of their traditional six state domains, the Steinberg domain .
