Krug is a champagne brand founded in Reims in 1843 . The company was founded by Johann-Joseph Krug from Mainz and is now owned by the luxury goods group LVMH . The company is managed by Rémi Krug and cellar master Eric Lebel.

Krug relies on traditional, almost artisanal production methods in the production of around 500,000 bottles each year. The base wines of all cuvées are matured in about 35 year old wooden barrels. The bottles are only sold when the wines are ready to drink. However, the manufacturer recommends leaving the bottles to rest for at least another year after purchase.

If the wines are fresh, the acidity can be very hard; Through proper storage, the champagne becomes rounder, somewhat softer and develops its characteristic aromas over time .

The Mono-Cru champagne Clos du Mesnil , a Blanc de Blancs from a single vineyard in Le Mesnil, was first brought onto the market from the 1979 vintage. Krug offers another mono-cru champagne under the name Clos d'Ambonnay . It is made from 100% Pinot Noir ; the first vintage was in 1995, the second in 1996. The offer price in restaurants is around 4,500 per bottle .

The cuvées

Krug Grande Cuvée
  • La Grande Cuvée : represents the majority of the production.
  • Rosé : the Krug rosé.
  • Millésimé : vintage champagne. The current vintages (as of 2009) are 1998, 1996 and 1995.
  • Collection : vintage champagne that rests on the yeast for a long time and therefore stays fresh for a long time. The current year is 1981.
  • Clos du Mesnil : One of the few champagnes made from a single location . It grows in the 1.85 hectare Clos du Mesnil in the municipality of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger . It is a Blanc de Blancs, a champagne made exclusively from Chardonnay grapes. The production volume is around 10,000 bottles per vintage.
  • Clos d'Ambonnay : The counterpart to the Clos du Mesnil; a pure Pinot Noir champagne from a single location in Ambonnay.
