Blanc de Blancs ( double. Literally, " White of white ") is a white wine , champagne or Crémant , exclusively from white grapes vinified was. Mostly this term is used for a champagne.

The situation in Champagne

In the Champagne wine-growing region , a Blanc de Blancs is a sparkling wine that is produced almost exclusively from Chardonnay grapes. A Blanc de Blancs is made without Pinot Noir (= Pinot Noir ) or Pinot Meunier (= Black Riesling). In contrast, there is the Blanc de Noirs , which is made only from red grapes. These products are cheaper because the Chardonnay grapes are much more expensive in the Champagne berry trade (from the best locations Grand cru and Premier cru currently approx. 5-6 € / kilo). On the other hand, a Blanc de Blancs is also much more storable and can often develop very advantageously during this time.

Since 1980, only the Chardonnay grape has been allowed if the product is to be called Blanc de blancs. However, 4 other white varieties are permitted in Champagne, Pinot blanc , Pinot gris , Arbane and Petit Meslier . But they are only rarely grown (Pinot Blanc) or very rarely. Exceptions for white champagnes may then be made. U. in rare individual cases specially marked and perhaps in quotation marks, for example the Quattuor IV by Drappier with four white varieties as "Blanc de quatre blancs".
