Petit Meslier

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Petit Meslier is a white wine from the Champagne wine region . It was still widespread there in the 19th century and, for historical reasons, is still approved for the expansion of champagne , but in terms of quantity it only plays an insignificant role. Since the yields are comparatively low at 30–40 hectoliters / hectare, it was given up in favor of Chardonnay . Petit Meslier was born from a spontaneous cross between Savagnin and Gouais Blanc.

After 48 hectares of vineyards were registered in 1958, today about 3 hectares are officially planted with Petit Meslier in the municipalities of Jouy-les-Reims, Verteuil and Cormoyeux in the Marne Valley and in Buxeuil on the Côte-de-Bar. Based on the pioneers Aubry and Moutard before the turn of the millennium, the importance, at a very low level, increases again somewhat. After the turn of the millennium, Drappier (Urville) and 2008 Agrapart & fils (Avize) created new plots with the old varieties - in addition to Petit Meslier and Arbane . In 2014 the Frères Laherté (Chavot) Petit Meslier planted a new area of around 60–70 ares.

The champagne house Duval-Leroy (Vertus) produces z. Z. (as of Aug. 2015) was the only one to produce a champagne exclusively from this grape. The vendor Tarlant (Oeilly) uses 64% Petit Meslier in their "BAM" champagne. The Aubry champagne house in Jouy-les-Reims produces "L'ombre d'or", a cuvée of 7 grape varieties, including Petit Meslier, and Laherté also produces "Les 7", a cuvée of all 7 approved champagnes. With the Cuvée 6 Cépages, Moutard Pére et Fils (= Moutard Diligent, Buxeuil) produces an assemblage of six grape varieties approved for champagne production, including Petit Meslier. The 2007 vintage is currently being sold. Since 2013, Agrapart & fils (Avize) has also been offering a 6-variety cuvée with the "Complantée". The 7th grade that is missing in both, the Pinot Gris vrai ( Pinot Gris ). Since 2007 the Drappier champagne house in Urville has been producing a "Quattuor" cuvée made from 25% each of Petit Meslier, Arbane, Pinot Blanc vrai and Chardonnay. Drappier recently created plots with the still missing white variety Pinot gris (called Fromenteau here).

Because of the small quantities and few suppliers, the champagnes with the old varieties (vieux cépages) are significantly more expensive than normal champagnes. The ones mentioned here already cost over 50 euros at the winemaker, if a direct purchase is possible at all (only the Quattuor is a little cheaper).

Small stocks are also known in the Eden Valley in Australia .
