Arbane

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Arbane is a white wine variety that comes from France, where it is one of the autochthonous varieties in the Bar-sur-Aube area within the Champagne wine-growing region . It was still widespread there in the 19th century and, for historical reasons, is still approved for the expansion of champagne , but in terms of quantity it only plays a minor role.

Due to its late ripening, it claims the best locations, but produces a very good and alcoholic wine in good years . Due to their disadvantage, only about 1 hectare is officially planted with Arbane on the Côte-de-Bar and in Venteuil in the Marne Valley and is rarely replanted. Others speak of 2 hectares and some champagne houses (the source here mentions at least 7) that are still or again working with the old varieties such as Arbane. Arbane is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphroditic flowers and is therefore self-fruiting. In viticulture , the economic disadvantage of not having to grow male plants that produce yield is avoided.

Starting with the pioneers Aubry in the north and the champagne house Moutard, as well as the winemaker (RM) Noël Leblond-Lenoir in the south of Champagne, who have revived the old varieties since around 1990, Arbane is also based on what is still an extremely small one Acreage - used again by some winemakers. Unmixed is Arbane only from the Champagne house Moutard-Diligent (= Moutard, Pere et fils) and the winemaking family Noël Leblond-Lenoir, both in Buxeuil on the Côte-de-Bar, of Moutard as "Vieilles Vignes Cépage Arbane" and Noël Leblond-Lenoir developed as a Cuvée Arbane. Arbane is also included in the "Cuvée des 6 Cépage" champagne.

The Champagne House Aubry in Jouy-lès-Reims has been producing a cuvée from the three grape varieties Petit Meslier , Arbane and Pinot Blanc (here often called Pinot blanc vrai to differentiate it from the very similar Chardonnay) since the early 1990s . Since 2007 the Drappier champagne house in Urville has been producing a cuvée "Quattuor IV, Blanc de quatre blancs", each made of 25% Petit Meslier, Arbane, Pinot Blanc vrai and Chardonnay . With "Les 7", Laherte creates a cuvée from all 7 approved champagnes. In 2008 Olivier Horiot produced a Cuvèe "5 Sens" u. a. with Arbane, also Agrapart & fils since 2009, which went on sale in 2013. Another supplier with a champagne "BAM!", Which contains 64% Petit Meslier and 18% Pinot Blanc as well as 18% Arbane, is Tarlant.

As mutations there is also a pink berry arbane rouge and a dark berry arbane noir.
