history
In the 7th century, today's Hunawihr was the seat of the Franconian tribal lord Huno, who is said to have settled on the site of a former Gallo-Roman villa. There is a legend about his wife Huna that she washed the clothes of the sick at the well below the church. Also, that in a year of poor harvest, she turned the well's water into wine. Her grave in the village church developed into a place of pilgrimage in the course of the Middle Ages . In 1520 Huna was canonized.
From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Hunawihr belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the district of Rappoltsweiler in the district of Upper Alsace .

Attractions
- In the small, castle-like Gothic church of St. Jakobus ( St. Jacques ) from the 14th century (renovated in the 16th century), the church space was expanded several times with the aim of creating a pilgrimage church. The lower floor of the massive church tower was decorated with frescoes , a late Gothic choir and a stone pulpit . The defensive wall from the 12th century offered the population protection from attacks. The church is a simultaneous church : Catholic and Protestant services take place in it. The church tower clock only has one hand: an hour hand decorated with grapes. The church has been classified as a Monument historique since 1929 .
- Also worth seeing are the town hall (1517) as well as some of the Renaissance winegrowers' houses and the Sankt Huna fountain.
- In the east of the municipality there is a stork park ( Parc des Cigognes ) and a butterfly park ( Parc des papillons ).
- The place was included in the list of the most beautiful villages in France due to the appearance of the place .
