Illhaeusern (German Illhäusern ) is a French commune with 702 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). She is a member of the Pays de Ribeauvillé municipal association .
geography
Illhaeusern is located in the Upper Rhine Plain in the Grand Ried , between Colmar to the south and Schlettstadt in the north, at the confluence of the Fecht with the Ill . The Départementstrasse D 106 connects the place with Guémar about three kilometers to the west and Elsenheim about six kilometers to the southeast. The municipality is largely used for agriculture .
history
The place is first mentioned in 1482 as a fishing village. In addition to fishing, the residents of the place also worked as river boatmen to transport goods (mainly grain and wine) on the Ill to Strasbourg. In 1795 the place was assigned to the Haut-Rhin department, where it belonged to the canton of Riqewihr until 1802, and then to the canton of Ribeauvillé . Over the years, other economic activities also provided opportunities for livelihood: shipbuilding and the extraction of sand and gravel from the Fecht and Ill, tobacco growing, basket weaving and cattle breeding. In 1833 the place became independent as a separate municipality.
From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Illhaeusern belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the district of Rappoltsweiler in the district of Upper Alsace .
Towards the end of the Second World War (December 1944 / January 1945) the place suffered particularly from the last battles for the Alsace bridgehead ( Colmar basin ). After extensive destruction, the place was liberated by Allied troops on January 25, 1945.
