history

Mittlach was first mentioned in 1571 under the name Mitla. In the 16th and 17th centuries, woodcutters immigrated from Switzerland and Austria. The importance of the timber industry becomes clear in the design of the coat of arms, which has been used since 1977.

In 1789 Mittlach was assigned to the municipality of Metzeral. Only since April 1, 1908 has the place been an independent municipality again. In 1911 the town hall and school ( Mairie-école ) was built, and in 1927 the church was consecrated to the Immaculate Conception ( Église de l'Immaculée-Conception ).
